In the modern age, speakers are entering a completely different environment than ever before. This presents both challenges and opportunities in communications. During the development stage of the perfect speech, it’s imperative you consider every element present and the perception at stake. Today’s society is much more complex than male and female. One must consider socioeconomic factors, gender identification, religious background, nationality, and much more. This goes without saying that an effective speaker is not founded in modified messages with the sole intention of appeasing the audience. An effective speaker maintains their integrity and character while being cognizant and respectful of attending audiences. Through this approach, leadership begins to take shape and the bottom line message becomes apparent.
Consider the perspective of the audience and set a standard of inclusion early on rather than late. The purpose served greatly benefits both sides and ensures messaging is not hindered due to perceived discrimination or differing views. Today’s political climate creates more opportunities for subjectivity to quickly unravel key messaging. This doesn’t have to be the case, however. Do your research, know your audience well in advance, and recall how much power a simple word or phrase carries with it. Simply put, there is no room for frivolous or meandering conversation. Take a temperature check periodically and evaluate the many nonverbal indications your audience will undoubtedly provide.
The “one-size-fits-all” approach in the modern communications atmosphere is an antiquated mindset that will almost always betray your message. Understanding this is one thing, but applying a modern solution requires an honest and transparent evaluation of messaging and determining if it truly speaks to a variety of individuals or tailored for a specific community. Keep in mind, tailored messaging should not be viewed as a negative or exclusive language. In fact, this can strike the audience on a personal level while recognizing differences and the realms of respect and maintaining them. Whatever your message may be, don’t fall short on researching how this impacts all people receiving the message.
